Facebook announces mobile payment initiative

Facebook said it could team up with mobile operators on payments, in an offer that would give them back part of the revenue and influence they have lost in recent years to Apple and Google.

Speaking for the first time at Mobile World Congress, the industry's biggest gathering, Facebook said operators could help it make money from its hundreds of millions of mobile users buying games or music on the social network.

Mobile operators have been increasingly sidelined by internet companies, which often appeal directly to consumers, hog network capacity with bandwidth-hungry services like YouTube, and compete with the telcos' own products.

US drone crashes in Pakistan

Sunday, February 26, 2012

A US drone has crashed in the volatile North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan, apparently due to a technical problem, officials said today.

The CIA-operated unmanned spy plane came down in the mountainous Machikhel area, 30 km from Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency.

The region has witnessed frequent drone strikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda elements in the past few years. There was no word from the US on the incident though unnamed Pakistani officials were quoted by TV news channels as saying that the drone apparently crashed due to a technical problem.

The site where the drone came down was surrounded by Taliban fighters, who took away parts of the spy plane. Western media reports said US officials had denied claims by the Taliban that the drone was shot down by militants.

Paralyzed Hockey Player Featured in Sports Illustrated Magazine

Saturday, February 25, 2012

A hockey player from The high school were paralyzed during the game in December who has been featured Sports Illustrated magazine in this weeks.

Minneapolis hockey mom and freelance writer Karen Schneider suggests that before 16 year old Jack Jablonski was checked from behind, Minnesota hockey was ravaged by overzealous coaches, win at all costs coaches, and officials who looked the other way. But after the injury and the adoption of stricter rules, Schneider says she noticed a far less physical game.

While not everyone agrees the game is less physical, many do.

Schneider says the refocusing on skill and finesse is a direct result of the Jablonski accident.

Lawyer: Amy Senser Wasn't Drunk During Hit-and-Run

The attorney of the wife of former Minnesota Vikings player Joe Senser says she was not intoxicated when she struck and killed a man last summer.

Amy Senser faces two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the death of Anousone Phanthavong, who was struck on an Interstate 94 exit ramp Aug. 23.

In a legal memorandum filed Friday, defense attorney Eric John Nelson wrote Senser may have been speeding and talking on her cellphone, but there's no evidence she was drunk.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the memo said earlier hints by prosecutors that she may have been drinking that night were "insulting prejudicial inferences" flung "for the sole purpose of inflaming and aggravating the potential jury pool."

Down to the Wire in 2-Man GOP Race in Michigan

Republican Mitt Romney fought Saturday to prove he is the strongest challenger to President Barack Obama, an increasingly difficult task given the tight race in his native state of Michigan against surging conservative Rick Santorum.

In the final weekend of campaigning before Tuesday's Michigan and Arizona primaries, Romney focused on central and southeast Michigan's urban and industrial centers in hopes of pulling ahead of Santorum.

With a Michigan victory, Santorum could solidify his place as a real threat to Romney heading into Super Tuesday, the 10-state sweepstakes on March. Santorum's victories so far have come in lower-turnout party caucuses.

While Romney kept most of his attention on the Democratic incumbent, he also worked to lay doubt about the core principles of his lightly funded main GOP rival.

Romney is the one facing stubborn doubts from some conservatives for his changed positions on social issues, but he tried to portray Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, as a Washington insider with cracks in his own conservative credentials. Santorum called such criticism "laughable" and said Michigan, where Romney was born and raised and his father was governor, was winnable.

A crowd in Lansing heard Romney accuse Santorum of caving to party leaders on issues he opposed, including financing Planned Parenthood.

"This is not time for lifelong pols who explain why they voted for this or that based on what they were asked to do by their fellow colleagues," Romney told about 300 activists gathered for breakfast at a country club. "I will be a president of principle."

Romney tried to undermine Santorum's profile as an abortion opponent by noting Santorum's backing in 1996 of fellow Pennsylvanian Arlen Specter in the GOP presidential race. "He supported the pro-choice candidate," Romney told more than 2,000 at a forum in Troy put on by a tea party umbrella group. Santorum spoke to the group, Americans for Prosperity, earlier Saturday.

Santorum, who has portrayed himself as a loyal conservative and is popular among evangelical conservatives, ridiculed Romney's claims.

"It is absolutely laughable to have a liberal governor of Massachusetts suggest that I am not a conservative," Santorum said to cheers to the same group. "He repeatedly gets up and says all these things that he didn't do that he did do. Folks, this is an issue of trust."

The volleys over principle and loyalty punctuate the all-out two-man race in Michigan, leaving behind the two others in the field. Both candidates are spending heavily on television advertising, although the better-funded Romney was laying out more.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul is hardly a factor in Michigan but is airing advertisements criticizing Santorum, which aids Romney. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was nowhere to be found in the state and has spent scant time in Arizona, which also holds its primary Tuesday.

Gingrich has acknowledged that he has no shot in Michigan or Arizona and has predicted Romney will win. Gingrich aides argue he stands to gain by Santorum or Romney coming out of Tuesday weaker.

Gingrich is betting heavily on Georgia, the state he represented in Congress, and a strong showing in Tennessee on March 6.

Romney campaigned across southern central and southeast Michigan, where his family name is familiar, and he reminded audiences of his ties to the state.

In Lansing, the capital, Romney recalled his father's chilly winter inaugurals. Romney's wife, Ann, also born in Michigan, reminisced in introducing the candidate in Troy about growing up a Tigers baseball fan and working for her father's business in the Detroit suburb.

Polls show a dead heat between Romney and Santorum, who is playing up his family's blue-collar background as the grandson of a Pennsylvania coal-miner. "This race is close. This race is winnable. But you've got to want it," Santorum told tea party members in St. Clair Shores.

Romney's attacks are a potential problem for Santorum because he's based his candidacy on presenting himself as an uncompromising conservative, contrasting himself with Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has struggled at times to explain why he's changed his position on abortion and other issues.

Santorum compared the health care bill Romney signed in Massachusetts in 2006 with the one Obama signed in 2010. The federal program is wildly unpopular with conservatives.

"Are you going to vote for someone that says one thing one day anything else the next day that's necessary to win? Or are you going to vote for someone you trust?" Santorum asked the crowd in Troy.

Santorum later made a quick detour to Tennessee, a Super Tuesday state that's gotten much less attention, to speak at a tea party rally in a large church in Chattanooga.

In Tennessee, Santorum rebuked Romney for backing the Wall Street bailout. He acknowledged that he and Romney opposed the auto industry bailout, and said Romney was inconsistent.

"I didn't pick and choose based on who my friends are," Santorum said to loud applause. "These are the biggest issues of this race. And we need a candidate who isn't compromised on every single one of them."

Santorum called Obama "a snob" for saying every American child should be able to go to college.

"Why does Obama want everybody to go to college? So his liberal college professors can be indoctrinating people like he has," Santorum said, drawing a long ovation.

Pakistan Begins Demolition of Bin Laden's Compound

Under powerful floodlights and surrounded by rings of soldiers and police, heavy machines began Saturday night to demolish the three-story compound in northwestern Pakistan where Osama bin Laden lived for years and was killed by U.S. commandos last May.

Each blow helped eliminate a concrete reminder of the painful and embarrassing chapter in Pakistan's history that the al-Qaida chief's discovery and death in a town not far from the nation's capital represented.

Pakistan was outraged by the covert American raid in Abbottabad because it was not told about it beforehand - a decision the U.S. explained was driven by concerns that someone in the government might tip off bin Laden.

The terror leader's death was cheered across the globe, but many Pakistanis were angry that the U.S. violated its territory and that its troops were powerless to stop American soldiers from attacking a compound located next to the country's equivalent of West Point, the elite U.S. military academy.

Just as U.S. Navy SEALs waited for the cover of darkness to descend on bin Laden's compound by helicopter from neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistani authorities held off on tearing it down Saturday until the sun had set, said local residents.

They brought in at least three machines equipped with powerful crane-like arms during the afternoon and also set up floodlights that allowed them to begin work at night, said the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were afraid of being harassed by the government.

A large team of police set up an outer cordon around the compound to keep spectators and journalists away, said an Associated Press reporter who managed to get close enough to see the demolition work under way. A ring of army soldiers set up an inner cordon and warmed themselves against the winter chill by lighting a bonfire.

The bulldozers broke through tall outer boundary walls that ringed a courtyard where one of the U.S. helicopters crashed during the operation to kill bin Laden. They then began to tear down the compound itself.

A Pakistani intelligence official confirmed that the demolition was in progress but declined to say why the government chose to do it. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The government did not give advance warning that it planned to tear down the compound.

Residents of the normally sleepy town of Abbottabad were divided on what the government should do with the compound in the aftermath of the raid. Some thought it should be destroyed, but others believed it should be turned into a tourist attraction to help the town earn money. There was always the danger, however, that it could also draw al-Qaida supporters.

American officials said they buried bin Laden's body at sea to avoid giving his followers a burial place that could become a makeshift shrine.

Many U.S. officials expressed disbelief that bin Laden could have lived in Abbottabad for around six years without the Pakistani government knowing. But the U.S. has not found any evidence that senior Pakistani officials knew of the al-Qaida chief's whereabouts.

The raid, which lasted around 40 minutes, was a serious blow to the already troubled U.S.-Pakistan relationship. Pakistan responded by kicking out more than 100 U.S. troops training Pakistanis in counterterrorism operations and reduced the level of intelligence cooperation.

Some members of Congress called on the U.S. to cut of the billions of dollars of military and civilian aid to Pakistan unless Islamabad explained bin Laden's presence in Abbottabad and boosted cooperation on the Afghan war. The aid has continued, although at a somewhat lower level.

Ties between the U.S. and Pakistan have also been strained by American drone strikes targeting Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country's northwest tribal region near the Afghan border.

A suspected U.S. drone crashed Saturday in the North Waziristan tribal area, the main sanctuary for militants along the border, said Pakistani intelligence officials and local residents.

The unmanned aircraft went down near Mir Ali, one of the main towns in North Waziristan, said the intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The drone caught fire after it hit the ground and was believed to have crashed because of technical problems, they said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the classified drone program, denied reports that the drone was shot down.

2 US Troops Shot in Kabul; NATO Pulls Workers

A gunman killed two American military advisers with shots to the back of the head Saturday inside a heavily guarded ministry building, and NATO ordered military workers out of Afghan ministries as protests raged for a fifth day over the burning of copies of the Quran at a U.S. army base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Interior Ministry attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, after the U.S. servicemen - a lieutenant colonel and a major - were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials said.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces recalled all international military personnel from the ministries, an unprecedented action in the decade-long war that highlights the growing friction between Afghans and their foreign partners at a critical juncture in the war.

The U.S.-led coalition is trying to mentor and strengthen Afghan security forces so they can lead the fight against the Taliban and foreign troops can go home. That mission, however, requires a measure of trust at a time when anti-Western sentiment is at an all-time high.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to apologize for the shooting and offer his condolences, Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement released in Washington.

"This act is unacceptable and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.

Security is tight in the capital, which is covered in snow, and foreigners working at the U.S. Embassy and at international organizations have been banned from leaving their compounds.

U.S. officials said they were searching for the assailant, who has not been identified by name or nationality.

Government's flip-flop on gay sex ban

IANS
New Delhi: A senior government lawyer Thursday urged the Supreme Court to ban "immoral" gay sex, only to be contradicted by the home ministry which said it had accepted a high court ruling that de-criminalised it.

Additional Solicitor General P.P. Malhotra, appearing for the government told the apex court that "gay sex is highly immoral and against social order and there is high chance of spreading of diseases through such acts".

He argued that the Indian constitution was "different and our moral and social values are also different from other countries".

"So we cannot follow them," he said. This was a dramatic reversal of the government stand outraging activists in the country.

The apex court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the high court's July 2, 2009 verdict holding that Section 377, which criminalises gay sex among consenting adults, was a violation of the fundamental rights.

But hours later, the home ministry issued a statement stating the government had not taken any position on banning homosexuality.

It said the government had in fact decided not to file an appeal against the Delhi High Court order on Section 377 that made gay sex punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

"The decision of the cabinet was that central government may not file an appeal against the high court judgment (in) the Supreme Court," the statement said.

It said the the cabinet had also decided if any other party prefers an appeal, the attorney general may be requested to assist the Supreme Court to examine the matter.

The sudden flip flop created confusion over the gay sex debate in the Supreme Court.

Sources in the home ministry told IANS that there had been some "miscommunication" over the issue and Malhotra, the senior government counsel, was reading an old statement prepared before the 2009 high court judgment.

Malhotra told the bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and S.J.Mukhopadhaya that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code should remain on the statute to check cases of child sex abuse and other "unnatural offences".

"It (sex with same gender) may be a derived right but not a absolute right and was subject to restriction.".

Malhotra said homosexuality was causing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.

The court asked about the "statistical data supporting such a nexus".

"Why do you attribute a particular act (homosexuality) to HIV," the bench asked.

The government stand in the court drew flak from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) activists who said the move was "irresponsible and illogical".

"I think it is irresponsible, illogical to come up with such opinions at this time. The ministry is ignoring what the Delhi High Court bench had observed three years ago when it decriminalised homosexuality," Mohnish Malhotra, a gay rights activist and one of the organisers of the annual gay pride march here, told IANS.

Shocking numbers of South Asian children go to bed hungry

Sunday, February 19, 2012

NEW DELHI (AlertNet) - One third of families in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are regularly going to bed hungry due to soaring food prices in a region which accounts for half the world's underweight children, the head of Save the Children says.

The charity's CEO Jasmine Whitbread told AlertNet it was particularly shocking that almost half of children in India, Asia's third largest economy, are stunted.

She was speaking in Delhi after the launch of a survey on child malnutrition by Save the Children conducted in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria and Peru.

"The survey showed that because of rising food prices, families report being able to purchase less food for their children and going without food for an entire day," Whitbread added.

"To me as a mother, that is shocking, to think of not being able to feed my child at all for a day on end. It just isn't right frankly, in this day and age, for children to be going to bed hungry night after night. It doesn't have to be that way."

All five countries surveyed have seen significant economic growth, but the accompanying report, A Life Free from Hunger, shows that the benefits are not being shared by all. Child malnutrition is an underlying cause of death for 2.6 million children annually - one-third of all child deaths - with most dying from preventable illnesses like diarrhoea due to weak immune systems.

Those lucky enough to survive, grow up without enough energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. This means children's brains and bodies do not develop properly and they become stunted - unable to fulfil their physical, academic or economic potential.

Whitbread said it was important to promote exclusive breast-feeding and good hygiene and sanitation practices, as well as to focus on the critical 1000-day period from conception to a child's second birthday, ensuring that both expectant mothers and infants get the right nutrients. "If a child is chronically malnourished during that time, then that can have long lasting effects. So it can affect IQ, their strength, their earning power. So absolutely, that is the time to intervene. It is the easiest and cheapest (time) to intervene."

INDIA'S WOES

South Asia, which also includes Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal, is locked into a vicious cycle of stunting that passes from generation to generation, the report says. A quarter of children in this region are born with low birth weights of less than 2.5 kg - which is a powerful predictor of stunting - compared to 12 percent in sub-saharan Africa.

Whitbread said although Bangladesh and Afghanistan had started at a lower base, they have both made faster progress than India on reducing the number of children dying from causes related to poor nutrition.

"What is happening in India, is that you've actually got a shocking percentage of children who are affected by not having enough food," she said. "India is the second largest world producer of wheat and rice and in that same country you have children who are simply not getting enough food."

Last month, a survey said 42 percent of Indian children under five were underweight, despite the country averaging 8 to 9 percent growth over the last five years.

Whitbread said gender discriminatory customs such as child marriage were a strong contributory factor towards high rates of child malnutrition.

"Often you've girls becoming mothers while they are still girls, so you've effectively got children being parented by children - that is not a cycle for progress and development," she said. "The whole issue of gender and empowerment of women and how girls are treated is a core part of how we tackle child malnutrition."

How well do you know your MF scheme

Investors typically take advice from friends, relatives or brokers to buy stocks or mutual fund plans—often, out of sheer laziness. Even informed investors commit this mistake. But those who do their homework and conduct due diligence before putting in their money could stand to gain significantly.

In the case of companies, it is their balance sheet which contains the relevant details. But, for mutual fund investors, it is the fact sheet of the fund. This is a booklet containing vital information about each of the schemes of that particular mutual fund. "One should read it not only before investing, but also after investing. People should ask for fact sheets from their advisors and respective fund houses on a regular basis. It updates the investor on the fund's performance and any changes that take place. For instance, any change in the scheme's expense ratio is something the investor would want to know about," says Murthy Nagarajan, head of fixed income, Tata Mutual Fund.

As Buchanan had been suspended from the network for 4 months and MSNBC President Phil Griffin said that he did not think Buchanan's views on race and in-migration in his book should be part of national dialogue.

Buchanan said that after 10 pleasurable years i am leaving after an incessant clamor from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency and dangerous.

As the circumstances of Buchanan's drop is unclear but he has not appeared on the channel since october when he began promoting his book "Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?” The book conveyed Buchanan’s concerns about the effects of demographic changes in the US, including what he called “the end of white America” and the shrinking of the “European and Christian core of our country.”

FCC plans to nix wireless network that may jam GPS

Federal officials plan to kill a private company's plans to build new national high speed wireless network after concluding it would in some cases jam personal navigation and other GPS devices.

The FCC said it will seek public comments Wednesday on revoking LightSquared's permit after a federal agency that coordinates wireless signals, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, concluded that there's no way to wipe out the risk of interference with GPS devices.

The Federal Communications Commission had seen LightSquared's plan as way to make more changes to feed consumers appetency for movies, music and games on a variety of mobile devices.

When FCC gave LightSquared provisional approval last year to build the network, it said the company would not be allowed to start operations until the government was satisfied that any problems are addressed. LightSquared and the FCC had insisted the new network could co-exist with GPS systems.

After conducted tests by government and industry groups, the NTIA said Tuesday that it found interference with dozens of personal navigation devices and aircraft control systems that rely on GPS.

LightSquared, which is based in Reston, Va., had no immediate comment Wednesday. The FCC said it was accepting public comments on its revocation plans until March 1.

The new technology might extenuate the problems in the future that is what the agency said, but it will take some time and money to replace GPS equipment already used extensively in the US. The NTIA also said adjustments to LightSquared's network could be very costly about billions of dollars and also might not solve all of the problems.
