(RNN) – Former South African President Nelson Mandela is resting comfortably after a hernia surgery Saturday, according to a family member.
CNN reported the family member of Mandela, 93, said he had the planned procedure and was in satisfactory condition. He was admitted to a hospital suffering a stomach ailment, according to a statement released by the South African government.
Mandela should be released from the hospital Sunday or Monday, according to CNN.
South Africa President Jacob Zuma asked everyone to respect the privacy of Mandela and his family.
Zuma also explained the hernia, at first labeled a "stomach ailment," was a long-standing problem and doctors felt it needed "proper specialist medical attention."
